Norton (Elliot) Awards for Excellence in Local Theatre are first presented.

Named for the longtime Boston Post and Boston Record critic, they are sponsored initially by the Boston Theatre District Association, then by the Boston Theatres and Producers, and then by the Boston Theater Critics Association. The first award, for sustained excellence, goes to Peter Altman, founding producing director of the Huntington Theatre Company. Other categories are added and the awards continue today.
